Blanco County ranch to receive Leopold Conservation Award for Texas
On May 27 in Austin, Selah-Bamberger Ranch Preserve in Blanco County received the 2009 Leopold Conservation Award for Texas from Sand County Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, part of the department's Lone Star Land Steward Awards program. For the fifth year, the Lone Star Land Steward Awards benefit from an association with Sand County Foundation, an international non-profit organization devoted to private lands conservation. Each ecological region award recipient and the wildlife management association recipient will receive $1,000 from the Foundation, while Selah-Bamberger Ranch Preserve as Leopold Conservation Award recipient will receive $10,000 and the Leopold crystal award. more


Specialist offers tips for managing cattle feeding during tough times
Once again cattle feeders are in an extended period of economic challenges and need to take advantage of every opportunity to survive in these tough economic times, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln beef cattle specialist said. "The problems cattle feeders face today are not much different from other years," However, today's economic conditions magnify the problems faced, and fluctuating feed costs and volatile markets force a greater sense of urgency." more


Upcoming conference seeks to help farmers, ranchers manage rangeland during times of economic instability
The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation Agricultural Division will host the 2009 Texoma Pasture Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 13, at the Convention Center in Ardmore. Entitled "Pasture and Range Stability During Times of Economic Instability," the conference focuses on answering key questions about managing pasture and rangeland in addition to reviewing resource use, during difficult financial times. more

When it comes to rain, Texas remains a state split into the haves and have-nots, according to reports by Texas AgriLife Extension Service personnel. While North Texas fields are still drying out from deluges of 12-15 inches, the drought continues to plague South Texas. Drowned-out corn is yellowing and stunted. Wheat, as in many other parts of Texas, got hit first by late freezes. In North Texas, the same flood that hurt corn further damaged wheat. more
