Texas-Mexico Ag Exchange Program now taking registrations
The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) is requesting proposals for educational exchange opportunities under the Texas-Mexico Agriculture Exchange Program. The purpose of this program is to provide an educational exchange to share information and improve understanding between Mexican and Texas agricultural producers on agricultural production and trade in both states. TDA recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Corporation for Rural Agriculture of Nuevo Leon to implement this program. This will provide a partnership for identifying high quality exchange participants who are appropriately positioned in the Mexican agricultural industry and will therefore establish lasting international business partnerships. more
Number of U.S. horses exposed to CEM hits 920
The ongoing investigation into contagious equine metritis (CEM) now includes more than 920 exposed or positive horses, according to the USDA. The investigation began in mid-December 2008, when a Quarter Horse stallion on a Kentucky farm tested positive during routine screening for international semen shipment. more
Lifting haze on post-fire land management
Landowners were reminded this spring of the devastation that comes with wildfire: Homes, structures and livestock were lost, while landowners who rely on grasslands, shrublands and forests as an enterprise were left trying to figure out how to recover vegetation and habitat. "Many people don't understand the role of fire in the ecosystem," said Terry Bidwell, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension rangeland ecology and management specialist. "Fire has been and still is an essential part of maintaining healthy native grassland, shrubland and forest ecosystems and has positive impacts." more

For the week ending May 23, feeder cattle price trends at Texas auctions were mixed, with about as many locations steady to $5 higher per hundredweight as those steady to $4 lower. Fed cattle prices were near unchanged from a week ago. more
