NRCS extends floodplain easement sign-up to April 10, 2009
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is extending the sign-up period - until April 10, 2009, - for floodplain easement assistance, a component of the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) program. Up to $145 million has been made available to eligible landowners nationwide through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and includes both technical and financial assistance. more
Commission adopts sweeping changes to deer regulations
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopted a series of wildlife and hunting related regulations that expand special buck antler restrictions and liberalize antlerless harvest opportunities in dozens of counties. The new rules take effect during the 2009-10 hunting seasons. Hunters are urged to check the Outdoor Annual of hunting and fishing regulations for county and species specific rules before going afield this fall. The annual will be available online and wherever hunting licenses are sold beginning Aug. 15. more
Bexar/Guadalupe/Comal beef cattle field day set in Converse May 9
This year's Bexar/Guadalupe/Comal County Beef Cattle Field Day will take place on May 9 in Converse, near San Antonio. The event is scheduled from 8:30 a.m-3:15 p.m. at the Connell Life Skills and Livestock Center at the Boysville facility, located at 8555 E. Loop 1604. Three continuing education units – 1.5 in the general category and 1.5 in laws and regulations – will be offered, Warren said. Registration is $15 if completed on or before May 6 and $20 at the door. The cost includes educational materials and lunch. more

For the week ending March 28, feeder cattle prices at Texas auctions were mostly steady to $4 higher per hundredweight. Fed cattle prices were slightly higher following a modest increase in beef prices. Cotton and grains were unchanged to lower. Rain and snow on the Plains boosted crop prospects and pushed wheat prices lower. more
