Red meat study gets publicity, but results questioned
The research report is making headlines around the world: Eating red meat can lead to an early death. The study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine claims that people who eat large amounts of red meat and processed meats face a greater risk of death from heart disease and cancer. The study tries to predict the future risk of death by relying on notoriously unreliable self reporting about what was eaten in the preceding five years. more

Equine protection bill may cause suffering among horses
A bill to further restrict options for unwanted horses could result in further suffering for the animals. The so-called Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act prohibits transportation, possession, sale or donation of horses destined for slaughter for human consumption. The proposed legislation takes away humane euthanasia at processing plants under veterinary supervision and replaces it with nothing. more

For the week ending March 21, feeder cattle prices at Texas auctions were mostly steady to as much as $7 higher per hundredweight. Higher fed cattle prices and seasonally lower supplies contributed to the increase. more
