Climatologist: No real drought breaker until fall
Despite the rain that dropped at least two inches on Bell County on Wednesday, a Texas climatologist says Texas can't expect a real rainmaker until fall. El NiƱo, or The Little Boy, the atmospheric warming of central Pacific Ocean waters that spawns rain-rich storm clouds, is on target for an appearance this fall and winter as the much-anticipated droughtbreaker for a dry, dusty Texas. more
Dry conditions could hamper turkey production, hunting prospects
Continued dry range conditions throughout much of the state this spring could have a negative impact on wild turkey production and hunting prospects, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists. If parts of Texas, particular in the south, remain parched there is concern among wildlife officials that Rio Grande turkey breeding activity and nesting effort will be greatly reduced or nonexistent. Since spring turkey hunters rely upon gobbling activity to locate and attract birds, the lack of interest by hens in breeding could make for tough hunting. more
Internships offered for Texas college students
A variety of internships are being offered in county offices of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service for college students. "We want to find students with an interest in agriculture, human sciences or youth development so we can let them 'test drive' working for AgriLife Extension," said Dan Bogart, AgriLife Extension human resources specialist. "We get to see them in action, and they get to experience a real work experience at the county level." more
