TSCRA joins TDA and industry leaders to announce new effort to rebuild rural southeast Texas devasated by Hurricane Ike
Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) First Vice President Dave Scott joined Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples and other industry leaders today to call on Texans to help out with a new effort to rebuild ranches devastated by Hurricane Ike. "Operation New Fences" is a volunteer relief effort scheduled for Saturday, April 25, to rebuild approximately 17,000 miles of fence line destroyed by the storm in Chambers, Galveston, Jefferson, Liberty and Orange counties. Ranchers in these areas are still in need of water, fencing supplies and hay.

NOAA Drought Monitor: Drought spreads across Central Plains
Little to no precipitation is anticipated in the most southern parts of the Southwest, and the Southeast will likely remain precipitation free until the passage of a frontal system as the period comes to a close. Temperatures are expected to be below average across much of the western third of the nation while the central and eastern U.S. are expected to be warmer to much warmer than average. more


Summer burning may be option for pasture maintenance
The greater duration of heat in a summer-prescribed burn provides more effective management of encroaching woody or cactus species on rangeland, according to a Texas AgriLife Research scientist. Controlling encroachments of prickly pear, mesquite, juniper and other rangeland plants that compete with grass can be pretty expensive without the use of fire in controlled burn situations, said Dr. Jim Ansley, AgriLife Research range management expert. more


$5000 reward posted in Borden County bull shooting case
Indian Canyon Ranch is offering a $5000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for shooting two bulls about six weeks ago. The two registered red Angus bulls were found dead in the brush about 30 yards from the highway and about 50 yards apart. Wyndel Culp, manager of Indian Canyon, believes kids are likely to blame, and that the bulls were probably shot by mistake. more
