Bipartisan group of Senators introduces FDA reform bill
U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Richard Burr (R-N.C.) March 3 introduced the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, which, if passed, would result in major reforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA). The bipartisan bill focuses on four key areas where supporters of the legislation claim the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) authorities and resources need improvement: food-borne illness prevention; food-borne illness detection and response; food defense capabilities; and resource availability and application generally. more

Don't become complacent around livestock
Farmers and ranchers who work with livestock need to stay vigilant around those animals. "Most ranchers and farmers who have cattle and horses like working with animals and interacting with them," North Dakota State University Extension Service veterinarian Charlie Stoltenow says. "The more they work with cattle and horses, the more comfortable they become around the animals. And with that comfort, producers sometimes take their animals for granted. Texas crop, weather, 3-4-09
As the Texas drought diminished soil moisture and dried out pastures and rangeland, wildfire reports have heated up, according to the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Texas Forest Service. During one 24-hour period, the agencies reported major fire activity in Atascosa, Bastrop, Bandera, Callahan, Erath, Garza, Henderson, Jack, Kenedy, Kerr, Parker, Runnels, Walker and Wilson counties. more
