USDA awards more than $11 million to improve animals through research, education and extension in animal genomics
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack March 2 awarded more than $11 million in grants to 15 states to support research, education and outreach in animal genomics that will enhance the protection and safety of agriculture and the food supply. The Fiscal Year 2008 projects were awarded through USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) National Research Initiative Animal Genome Program which seeks to develop sound, practical, science-based knowledge that can be shared with other researchers, farmers and consumers of U.S. animal products. more


U.S. beef sales to Japan may rise 35 percent, group gays
U.S. beef sales to Japan, the third- largest importer, may increase 35 percent this year as the stronger yen reduces prices and boosts demand. Exports, including meat from internal organs, may rise to about 100,000 metric tons from 74,000 tons last year, Philip Seng, president and chief executive officer of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, said in Tokyo March 2. The yen jumped 23 percent against the dollar in 2008. more


South Texas Covey Connection seeking additional landowner participants
The South Texas Covey Connection is looking for additional landowners to join its ranks, says wildlife scientist Susan Cooper, a researcher at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Uvalde. The Center provides relevant research toward managing quail and quail habitat. more


Agriculture and the credit crisis: Impacts of tighter credit in agriculture
Credit availability is a critical factor in agricultural production. As the financial markets move out of the turbulent third and fourth quarter of 2008, no one can be certain where we are headed. The government bailout plan may grease the wheel and allow credit to flow once again, but we are still in a recession. The question is how long and how severe will the recession be? more

For the week ending Feb. 28, feeder cattle price trends at Texas auctions were mixed, from $4 lower to $5 higher per hundredweight. Fed cattle prices were $2 higher. Cotton prices continue to fall because of weak global demand. Corn and grain sorghum prices were higher as gains early in the week more than offset later declines. more
