Cattlemen speak out on Clean Water Act land grab
The Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee passed S. 787, the Clean Water Restoration Act (CWRA) out of committee June 18 on a party-line vote, bringing the country one step closer to the largest federal land grab in our history. The bill was amended at the markup by Senators Baucus, Klobuchar, and Boxer. The amendment is a smoke screen that allegedly takes care of agricultural concerns by exempting prior-converted croplands from federal jurisdiction. Cattle are generally not grazed on prior-converted croplands, so this amendment does nothing to mitigate the potential damage to livestock production from this legislation. more
House Ag Republicans want more time to study Cap & Trade
Republicans on the House Agriculture Committee are calling on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to extend the timeline for considering a proposal to regulate greenhouse gasses. The bill, which originated in the Energy and Commerce Committee, seeks to establish a nationwide system to regulate carbon dioxide emissions by setting a cap on the level of emissions and allowing companies to trade for permits to emit. more
Cow burps unregulated by federal government, ranchers hope to stay that way
Cow burps are not regulated by the federal government. And ranchers want to keep it that way. Those burps include methane, a greenhouse gas that ranchers fear could become closely regulated under pending Environmental Protection Agency proposals. Farm and ranch groups are spreading the word that, in theory, the federal government could hit even small ranches with fees and fines for producing methane if the EPA defines the gas as endangering public health. more
Disposal of cattle carcasses topic of Friday eXtension Web cast
Every dairy and beef producer eventually must manage the disposal of dead animals. For years, rendering was the recommended method of disposal. However, a new rule from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) went into effect April 27. Three experts will address the rule and options for producers and others in an eXtension webcast Friday, June 19. more
