Meat industry contributes $832 billion annually to U.S. economy according to new AMI economic impact study
America's meat and poultry industry, comprised of packers and processors, wholesalers and retailers, directly and indirectly contributes $832.4 billion dollars annually to the U.S. economy, roughly 5.8 percent of total GDP, according to a new Economic Impact Study unveiled June 12 by AMI. The analysis of direct, supplier and induced impact also illustrates the industry provides nearly 6.2 million jobs, generating almost $200 billion in wages and benefits. more
Ag credit not immune from financial crisis
Agricultural lending is a long way from suffering the problems of the 1980s, bankers and members of the Farm Credit System told a House Agriculture Committee hearing Thursday, but the problems of big banks have filtered down to an industry whose borrowers are facing tight margins, even losses. The leading indicator of stress could be the USDA Farm Service Agency, which makes loans to farmers unable to qualify for credit elsewhere. more

Texas AgriLife Extension Service's Sterling County Range and Livestock Committee will host the Sterling County Weed and Brush Control Field Day on June 23. The event will begin at 8:30 am. in the Sterling County Community Center located on Main Street, one block east of the Sterling County court house. more
TDA Market Recap June 15, 2009
For the week ending June 13, feeder cattle prices at Texas auctions were steady to $5 lower per hundredweight, with a few areas $3 higher on offerings under 500 pounds. Recent declines in finished cattle prices and ongoing losses by cattle feeders continue to pressure the market. Fed cattle prices were near unchanged from a week ago. more
