TDA takes first step toward delivering broadband service, high-speed connectivity to all Texas communities
The Texas Department of Agriculture, in coordination with the Public Utility Commission, is seeking proposals from telecommunications companies to map the state of Texas for broadband availability, which will help provide service to those areas lacking high-speed Internet connectivity. The agency will also create a task force to provide guidance for a statewide broadband strategic plan. more


New online feral hog reporting tool to help with Plum Creek Watershed water quality
The Texas AgriLife Extension Service has developed an online system to report feral hog activity that may be affecting water quality in the Plum Creek Watershed area. The new system, being piloted in Caldwell and Hays counties, will be used to support efforts by the Plum Creek Watershed Partnership. The partnership consists of area landowners and citizens, city and county officials, and state and federal agencies working together to protect water quality in Plum Creek and its tributaries. more


Weed problems more common this year in East Texas pastures
Farmers and ranchers are seeing more weeds – both common and unusual varieties – this year, according to Dr. Vanessa Corriher, Texas AgriLife Extension Service forage specialist based at Overton. Corriher said producers can expect to have more problems with weeds this year because high fertilizer costs limited their use in many pastures last year. Lower fertility means the improved forages such as Bermuda grass are less able to compete with weeds. more


TDA Market Recap, 6-8-09
For the week ending June 6, feeder cattle prices at Texas auctions were mostly steady to $6 lower per hundred-weight. A few locations were $2 higher on offerings weighing less than 500 pounds. Fed cattle prices were lower as beef values continued to drop. more
