Montana horse slaughterhouse bill moves forward
The Montana House of Representatives strongly endorsed a bill that paves the way for construction of a horse slaughterhouse in Montana and aims to bring the industry back to the United States. Backers said ranchers and those who own horses have been struggling ever since all the slaughterhouses in the country were closed down. They said it is far more difficult now to dispose of old, sick or injured animals. more
Study: No land change impact from future ethanol expansion
Expansion of corn ethanol production to 15 billion gallons per year in 2015 is unlikely to result in the conversion of non-agricultural lands in the U.S. or abroad, according to a new study released today by Air Improvement Resource, Inc. (AIR). Increasing crop yields and growing supplies of nutrient-dense feed co-products are likely to nullify the need to expand global cropland to meet the corn ethanol requirements of the Renewable Fuels Standard, the study found. more
NMSU Hidalgo County Extension hosts cattleman's survival course
Cattlemen can get the latest update on bovine tuberculosis (TB) and get help finding ways to survive in today's tough times in New Mexico during the third annual Southwestern New Mexico Cattleman's Survival Course presented by New Mexico State University's Hidalgo County Cooperative Extension Service. The course will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at the Animas Community Center in Animas. Cost is $10 per person, which includes lunch sponsored by the Hidalgo County Cattlegrowers Association. more

There's only so many ways you can describe "dry and drier," said Texas AgriLife Extension Service agents throughout the state. With a few exceptions, the state went another week without significant rainfall. Burn bans continued in many counties, with others considering implementing them. Windy conditions in the west didn't help matters, as they accelerated the drying out of top soils and crops. more

The TSCRA Political Action Committee (PAC) will host the 2009 TSCRA PAC Dinner and Live Auction during the TSCRA Annual Convention and Trade Show on Friday, March 20 at 7 p.m. at the Worthington Hotel in Fort Worth. We are currently seeking items for the auction and would greatly appreciate it if you would donate an item. Items such as hunting and fishing trips, college football packages, overnight packages such as a vineyard package or a resort-spa weekend package, cruises, bronze statues and art work, rodeo packages, and ranch equipment and supplies have been successful in the past. The proceeds from the items sold at the auction go to the TSCRA PAC so that it can support elected officials who support the cattle industry.
