No more cattle calls for Llano auction
After almost 50 years, Llano Livestock Auction closed for good Feb. 17. Owner Hatch Smith's grandfather first took over the business, during a time when Llano was a strong agricultural city. Smith said Llano's cattle industry has changed dramatically since his grandfather's days; the price of cattle has dropped and ranch land is being developed as well as drying out in the worst drought since the 1950s. Those factors are now forcing ranchers to quit the industry, and that translates into fewer cattle to bought and sold. more
K-State veterinary researchers developing tools that will make it easier to make cattle more comfortable
A jogger's heart rate monitor and an instrument similar to a pedometer are a few of the tools K-State researchers are using to measure discomfort in cattle undergoing two routine procedures, castration and dehorning. They are developing a model that can evaluate pain management drugs for cattle. Although producers and veterinarians sometimes use aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs, there are no pharmaceuticals approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration specifically for pain management in cattle. It is also unknown what doses are appropriate and how well they work. more
