Beef industry recognizes Earth Day; ranchers support the environment
TSCRA leaders Dave Scott, TSCRA president, and Dr. Dick Sherron, TSCRA past-president, were just two of several producers to weigh in on behalf of "everyday environmentalist ranchers" to local newspapers on Earth Day, celebrating beef's role in a healthy diet and fit environment. Plus, new information from a nationwide survey of cattle producers shows that the industry's raising a lot more than just cattle. Sustaining grass and rangelands, protecting wildlife habitats and maintaining natural waterways are a few ways ranchers help protect the environment, the survey shows. more


Ag economist expects robust improvement of cattle prices by 2010
The beef industry has suffered one of the most dramatic negative impacts from the general economy but could experience an equally dramatic recovery when the economy rebounds, said a Purdue University agricultural economist. "As beef cow numbers continue to drop, beef exports continue to improve and the world economy begins to heal, the magnitude of price improvement may be robust by sometime in 2010…" more


TCEQ announces publication of free rain harvesting guide
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has announced the publication of Rainwater Harvesting with Rain Barrels, a brief and easy to understand guide which helps Texans learn the basics of collecting this valuable natural resource. Faced with a growing population and a diminishing water supply, Texas will need to both conserve existing resources and encourage alternative technologies, such as rainwater harvesting. more

Is Texas still in a drought? It depends upon whom you talk to. Some parts of the state are doing very well, thank you, while other areas are still suffering from ongoing drought or its past damages, according to reports from the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. more
