NRCS offers recovery assistance following wildfires
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is offering technical and financial assistance to landowners impacted by drought and wildfires. Imports expected to increase as global demand for beef declines
The United States is expected to import 2.77 billion pounds of beef in 2009, a 9 percent increase from 2008. Total U.S. imports in January and February were 12 percent higher than January and February 2008. Last year's 2.538 billion pounds of imports was the lowest since 1997, driven by high cow slaughter domestically, a weak U.S. dollar, and strong global demand for foreign producers' beef. Agriculture Secretary Vilsack announces $84.8 million for vital watershed projects
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Thursday, April 16 that the USDA will be sending $84.8 million to state and local governments to improve water quality, increase water supply, decrease soil erosion, and improve fish and wildlife habitat in rural communities as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. Other major benefits include improved community safety and health, flood mitigation, sediment control, and enhanced fish and wildlife habitat. more
NRCS accepts applications for Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is accepting applications for the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP), a voluntary conservation program that helps farmers and ranchers keep their land in agriculture. Eligible entities can apply at any time, but must submit applications on or before June 1, 2009, to receive consideration for funding in fiscal year 2009. more
