FDA announces proposed delay of BSE final rule implementation
The Food and Drug Administration announced April 6 a proposed delay in the implementation of the final rule entitled, "Substances Prohibited from Use in Animal Food or Feed" or more commonly referred to as the 2008 BSE final rule. The final rule, which would have gone into effect on April 27, 2009, is proposed to be delayed 60 days to June 26, 2009. more
Prolonged Texas drought impacts wildlife
Despite welcome rains in late March, much of Texas remains parched by prolonged drought of historic proportions, and wildlife die-offs of whooping cranes and deer have been reported. However, experts say native wildlife evolved to bounce back from drought, and a bigger issue is how human water use is changing the equation, and how drought underscores the need for water planning and conservation. more
UT San Antonio to host bear conservation presentation April 16
The University of Texas at San Antonio is proud to host Dr. John Beecham and Dr. Diana Doan-Crider in a public presentation on "Bear Conservation Around the World," and "Bears of Mexico and Texas" April 16 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Main Building 0.106 Auditorium.
Admission is free. Doan-Crider will discuss her work with Mexican cattle ranchers and their role in black bear conservation. She'll also talk about the status of Mexico's rapidly expanding bear population and what this might mean for Texas. more

For the week ending April 4, feeder cattle prices at Texas auctions were mostly steady to $5 per hundredweight higher, with some locations steady to $4 lower. Fed cattle prices were almost $2 higher. Pastures remain dry, though recent rains have improved conditions somewhat. more
