Beef Industry Town Hall Meeting tonight in Wharton
The Beef Industry Town Hall Meeting for Monday evening will be held at Wharton Livestock Auction, 3230 N. Richmond Road, Wharton, Texas. Producers will have the opportunity to hear presentations by key representatives from TSCRA, Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA) and the Texas Beef Council (TBC) and learn about current issues facing the beef industry. They will also have an opportunity to ask questions and engage in conversations with industry leaders. Producers do not have to be a member of any industry organization or association to attend.  Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. and a free meal will be  served at 6:00 p.m. Presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m. more
 

'Tick Riders' guard U.S.from deadly pest, one cow at a time
Fred Garza has been patrolling a piece of the Rio Grande for 16 years, usually riding solo on horseback, sometimes venturing to areas where his radio and cell phone have limited range. But Garza's not looking for drug smugglers, human traffickers or illegal immigrants. Garza is a veteran of the 61-person U.S. Department of Agriculture's "Tick Rider" force, a group that keeps watch over a 700-mile buffer zone along the Rio Grande from Brownsville to Del Rio. more
 

Maximize success through good yearling bull management
Using bulls as yearlings is an excellent way to get an additional year of use from bulls, reducing the per-cow bull depreciation cost. Kent Barnes, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service area livestock specialist, said there are several management tips that cattle producers can use to maximize the success of yearling bulls. more
 

Black bears are on the move in Texas
In the dim light before dawn, it's hard to tell what that dark shape is under the feeder 100 yards from your hunting blind. It's probably a feral hog stealing corn you bought for deer to supplement native forage. But make a positive identification before you pull the trigger; that hog-like shape could be a black bear. more
 

Fire ants and horses
Fire ants deliver a simultaneous bite and sting that are very painful and give them their infamous name. The threat of fire ants to healthy, ambulatory adult animals is fairly minimal. However, fire ants can be a significant threat to recumbent (down) animals and to newborns if they lie down or are born on or near an ant bed. more
