unveils first wildlife plans in new conservation practice
Acting Agriculture
Secretary Chuck Conner said Friday USDA has approved conservation
projects on more than a quarter-million acres in 18 states under a
new partnership within the Conservation Reserve Program. Texas is
one of those states approved for projects.

Congressman wants to end slaughter of U.S.
horses abroad
A Kentucky
congressman is co-sponsoring legislation that would ban the
transport, sale, purchase or donation of horses to be slaughtered
for human consumption. Ed Whitfield, a Republican from the 1st
District, said he considers the practice inhumane and wants to see
it end.

finalizes minor updates to BSE minimal-risk countries
regulations
The
U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection
Service (APHIS) is amending its regulations regarding the importation of
animals and animal products. APHIS is removing several restrictions
regarding animal identification and ruminant materials processing
from regions that present a minimal risk of introducing BSE, or mad
cow disease, into the U.S..

Applications for the 2008 YCC are still being accepted for those
between 25 and 50 years of age who are
interested in joining the program.
The tour and conference, which begins in Denver and proceeds across
the country to Washington D.C., helps young leaders understand all
areas of the beef business, ranging from industry structure to
issues management and from production research to marketing.

‘Last Chance’ continuing education unit
training set for Feb. 5
People needing Texas
Department of Agriculture continuing education units can earn five
during the Texas AgriLife Extension Service "Last Chance" pesticide
license training. The training will run from 12:30-6 p.m. Feb. 5 at
the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at San Angelo.
