2008 Feed market
situation and outlook
Driven primarily by biofuel demand, competition for agricultural
resources is profoundly impacting all agricultural markets, either
directly or indirectly. Although it is not yet clear what the
permanent impacts will be, agricultural markets will, at a minimum,
be in transition for several years.

Comment period extended
for M-44 and compound 1080
Federal officials have extended the comment period to March 5, 2008,
for those interested in commenting on the petition to cancel all
uses of M-44 (sodium cyanide capsules) and compound 1080 (sodium
fluoroacetate). The original comment period expired
Jan. 15.

Forage seminar readies
producers for spring growing season
Texas AgriLife Extension
Service will conduct a forage seminar beginning on Feb. 5, 2008, in
Cross Plains, Texas. The seminar will provide producers with
information on forage management strategies to help them produce
uniform, high quality forage to meet their production goals. Five
Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be
available to those staying for the entire seminar.

In the past 30 years,
bovines get beefier
Between 1970 and 2006, the average weight of the cattle walking
around our nation's plains and Denver's National Western Stock Show
has ballooned 23 percent, from 1,035 pounds to 1,275 pounds,
according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
