FABRI: New biofuel mandates will significantly increase crop usage
Biofuel mandates in the energy bill passed by Congress could result in significantly higher corn and soybean use for fuel than would have occurred under pre-mandate policies. Production of corn-based ethanol goes up 24 percent and soydiesel goes up 89 percent under one set of assumptions, according to the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI). more
 

Winter forage conditions send cows to slaughter, calves to feedlots
While some much-needed precipitation has fallen in areas of the Southeast and Southern Plains States, it is too late to produce much cool-season forage or wheat pasture for cattle for the remainder of the winter. It will, however, be of some value for Spring and Summer pastures, wheat, and other grain crops in 2008. more
 

AVMA issues answers to frequently asked questions concerning HSVMA
On Jan. 14, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) announced a "corporate combination" with the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR) to form the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA). The American Veterinary Medical Association has issued answers to some questions the AVMA has been asked regarding this new association. more
 

New Mexico bovine TB status update
The TB situation in New Mexico continues to be on the forefront for the New Mexico Livestock Board along with the New Mexico dairy and beef industries. All of the dairies and beef herds that had any association with the TB infected Curry county herd have been TB tested. No TB positive cows were found. more
