Court grants access to Texas city's land in border fence dispute
A federal judge has
ordered a small border city to temporarily turn over its land to the
federal government so it can begin to build a border fence. A
U.S. District Judge ordered the city of
Eagle Pass to "surrender" 233 acres of city-owned land. The Justice
Department sued the city the same day for access to the land.

Rising living standards in Brazil
will cut beef exports
Despite the prospect of a small
increase in beef production in the current year, Brazil is likely to
export less beef in 2008, according to Robert Metcalfe of the
Brazilian Beef Information Service. Demand on the home front is
growing rapidly as living standards rise and it is reckoned that
consumption in Brazil increased by at least 180,000 tons during
2007.

Not everyone happy that cloned
cattle are in stock shows
Although the Food and Drug
Administration has released a long-awaited study finding that milk
and meat from healthy clones are no different than those from
ordinary animals and critics seek to keep clone-derived food off the
market, clones and their close relatives have left the pasture and
are making their way into major livestock competitions.

for surgery
Prather Ranch has built a diversified business that would remain
sustainable through fluctuations in the price of meat–the
most valuable parts of its cows are the inedible parts: pituitary
glands, bones, heart muscles and hides. Medical companies covet Jim
Rickerts' cows for making surgical glue, bone screws, collagen and
artificial skin. "In most years, these things are more valuable than
the meat…"
