Ratio of cattle to corn at lowest point in over a decade
As corn futures have surged
higher in the last few weeks, the livestock to feed price ratios
have continued to deteriorate. Currently the ratio of nearby live
cattle futures to nearby corn declined past the 20:1 mark, the
lowest point since 1996 and almost 15 points lower than the long
term averages.

Strict immigration
law rattles Okla. businesses
Oklahoma's new
law, which took effect Nov. 1, is particularly far-reaching and has
begun sending ripples through the state's economy and its immigrant
communities. Some businesses
and lawmakers are warning that the economic effects will hit
consumers hard.

U.S. horse
slaughter exports to Mexico increase 312 percent
Since
all three U.S. horse slaughter operations were ordered closed last
year, the number of horses exported to Mexico for slaughter has
exploded. As of Dec. 20, 2007, 44,475 horses had been shipped to
Mexico for processing for human consumption compared with 10,783
shipped at the same time in 2006—a 312 percent increase.

American beef makes
a comeback in Japan
U.S. beef has
made some gains against Australia in the lucrative Japanese market,
in the first full year of trading since the 2003 BSE outbreak. U.S.
beef exports to Japan rose more than eight-fold in 2007, while
Australia's beef exports fell seven percent.
