a speech to more than 800 faculty and staff at Texas A&M
University's AgriLife Conference in College Station on Tuesday,
Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples encouraged all Texans to play
a part in preserving our state's multi-billion dollar agriculture
industry and enhancing rural economic development.

The
Tulsa Stockyards' weekly auction, which saw its normal two-week
holiday break stretched out by last month's ice, electrical and
computer problems, has finally sold cattle for the first time since
Dec. 3, 2007.

Across the U.S., the number of horses whose owners won't or can't
properly care for them is mushrooming. Spurred by retiring baby
boomers and their penchant for second homes in the country, horse
ownership boomed in the U.S. over the past decade.

For
the week ending Jan. 5, 2008, cash feeder steer prices at Texas
auctions averaged $115.43 per hundred-weight in very light
holiday-week trade. Fed cattle cash prices were higher as packers
secured supplies following the holidays and resumed a full-week
processing schedule.
