Auction yards fight Canadian
border cattle rule
Five South Dakota auction
yards recently hosted fundraisers that generated more than $50,000
to support a legal battle to stop older Canadian cattle from coming
into the United States. The plaintiffs say the move increases the
risk of BSE infection in the U.S. cattle herd.

proposed USDA rule on horse transport unauthorized
The Livestock
Marketing Association has told the U.S. Department of Agriculture
that the agency's proposed new rule on transporting horses sets up
"an unauthorized administrative and enforcement nightmare for the
equine industry and livestock markets."

LMIC reports 2007 cow-calf returns
slightly positive
U.S. cow-calf operations have seen their profitability decline in
recent years due to lower calf prices and higher costs of
production. Still, returns were slightly positive for 2007.

one of 2007's top 10 unfounded health scares
In order to
shine light on the health fear frenzy portrayed by the media, the
American Council on Science and Health has published a roundup of
the most frightening and prominent-but groundless-health scares in
the media in 2007. The link between cancer and red meat was listed
at No. 3.

EPA
seeks comments on cancellation of cyanide capsules and compound 1080
The Environmental Protection
Agency requests public comments through Jan. 15, 2008, on a petition to
cancel all uses of M-44 sodium cyanide capsules and compound 1080
(sodium fluoroacetate). These products are most often used in predator
collars for controlling coyotes.

Cattlemen's Conference applications now available
Applications
for the 2008 Young Cattlemen's Conference are now available for
those interested in joining the program. The tour begins in Denver,
Colo., on May 29 and wraps up in Washington, D.C., on June 5. The
application deadline is Feb. 15, and interviews will be conducted
during TSCRA's 2008 Convention and Trade Show in Corpus Christi,
Texas, in March.
