Supreme Court asked to review
ruling shutting down Ill. horse processing plant
An Ill. law that closed a
state horse processing plant, and the federal appeals court decision
upholding the law, have effectively exempted 40,000–60,000 horses
from humane slaughter. That is a key reason why the U.S. Supreme
Court should hear the appeal of the decision by the plant, according
to a brief filed on Feb. 22 by Livestock Marketing Association.

U.S. cattle on feed up 2 percent
Inventory was 2 percent above Feb. 1, 2007, but 1 percent below Feb. 1, 2006.
This is the second highest Feb. 1 inventory since the series began in 1996.

News the U.K. is now
officially free of foot-and-mouth disease has been greeted with delight by meat
levy bodies–the British Pig Executive (BPEX) and the English Beef and Lamb
Executive (EBLEX).

Scheduled I-69/TTC public hearings for
Feb. 25-29
The study area for I-69/TTC was
recently narrowed, and TxDOT officials want to hear from Texans about these
recommendations. At the hearings, TxDOT staff will be available to answer
project questions. Meetings are scheduled for the following areas this week:
East Bernard, Beeville, Goliad, Hempstead, Humble, Katy, Navasota, Refugio,
Rosenberg, Sealy, Waller, and Victoria.
