NCBA members elect officers, debate policy issues
at annual convention
Members of
the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) held their board of
directors meeting and annual membership meeting Saturday. Cattlemen
debated a number of important policy issues, but enhancement of the
Beef Checkoff Program drew the most interest and discussion.

Agriculture Secretary Schafer addresses
cattlemen on global trade, farm bill, ethanol policy
Newly
confirmed Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer addressed the Cattle
Industry Annual convention Saturday in Reno, Nev. With less than a
year left in President Bush's term, Schafer made it clear he has
no plans to be a "caretaker" at USDA.

stresses testing for trich in cattle
Bovine trichomoniasis
has infected cattle in Quay County, N.M., said John C. Wenzel,
extension veterinarian for New Mexico State University in Las
Cruces. "It's pretty much an issue in most counties in the state
right now…"

Vaccine could offer FMD control
Joint
research between the Agricultural Research Service, the Department
of Homeland Security's Targeted Advanced Development Unit, and the
Vector Science Group of GenVec, Inc., has led to development of a
promising vaccine for protecting cattle, swine, sheep, and deer from
foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).
