USDA issues
disaster payments for crop, livestock and feed losses
Acting Agriculture
Secretary Chuck Conner has announced that the USDA will begin
issuing payments Thursday to tens of thousands of farmers and
ranchers across the country who suffered losses because of natural
disasters.
USDA
is currently processing about $1 billion in payments under the Crop
Disaster Program, Livestock Compensation Program and Livestock
Indemnity Program.

Border group urges consultation
required in spending bill
The Texas Border
Coalition is urging Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to
consult with them and other government agencies on a border fence as
required in a spending bill approved by Congress. The bill requires
the department to consult with local communities and officials,
government agencies and Indian tribes on ways to reduce the
environmental and cultural impact of the fence.

Producers
favor tracking cloned animals
With the government set to allow food from cloned animals onto the
market and consumers not yet convinced it's safe,
meat and dairy producers are promoting an industry-led system to
track cloned livestock.

Farm bill
update, 12-20-07
Congress has approved a continuing resolution in the omnibus
appropriations bill for the current farm bill and related funding
until March 2008. The farm bill is now in conference between the
Senate and House, with members of the conference committee to be
named in early January.

Feed grain
market outlook
The USDA's Supply and
Demand report issued the week of Dec. 10 had few surprises but did
contain revised estimates that were supportive of corn prices. U.S.
production and domestic uses were unchanged, but exports were
increased by 100 million bushels to 2.45 billion. This would be a
record level for corn exports, exceeding the previous record of 2.4
billion set in the 1979/80 marketing year.
