Senate Farm
Bill remains problematic for cattle producers
For
cattlemen, the Senate package passed Friday is far from perfect.
Most notably, a ban on packer ownership of cattle would jeopardize
many of the marketing alliances cattlemen have worked hard to build.

USDA and
partners continue registering NAIS success
The U.S.
Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection
Service has recorded 429,600 premises registered nationwide–with
substantial increases this year in the number of premises registered
as part of the National Animal Identification System.

Second
phase of U.K. FMD did not originate from Pirbright lab
Genetic
analysis by scientists at the Institute for Animal Health (IAH) has
shown that the first and second phases of foot-and-mouth disease
infections of the 2007 outbreak comprise a single chain of
transmission events. The second phase could not have
separately and directly
originated from the site
housing IAH's Pirbright Laboratory and the vaccine company Merial.

Mexico still largest
market for U.S. beef
According
to a recent United States Meat Export Federation Report,
Mexico is
still the largest market for U.S. beef with a three percent increase in
value to $993.44 million (including variety meat) despite a three percent
decline in volume to 298,407 metric tons (mt). Exports to Mexico in October increased
17 percent over October 2006 and totaled 35,810 mt.
