Land & Horse Ownership

Private property in Texas and Oklahoma is big business. Over 90% of the land in these states is privately owned--by agricultural producers. So it makes sense that subscribers to The Cattleman and members of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association want to improve their range and pasture lands.

Subscribers to The Cattleman own or manage an average of 4,189 acres, for a projected total of 58,887,584 acres.

These subscribers plan to make substantial improvements to their land in the coming year, with estimated expenditures of $48,706,756 as follows:

  • 9,283 plan to do weed control for a total of $19,070,995
  • 7,606 plan to use brush control for a total of $20,424,240
  • 5,019 plan to seed permanent pasture for a total of $9,211,521

Almost two-thirds of the subscribers to The Cattleman (8,956) plan to build fence in the next two years or so. They plan to build an average of 2.61 miles of fence, for a total of 23,375 miles. They plan to purchase a wide variety of fencing materials totaling $33,158,701:

  • 9,932 plan to buy barbed wire
  • 8,822 plan to buy steel posts
  • 4,235 plan to buy wood posts
  • 2,320 plan to buy electric fence wire
  • 1,995 plan to buy net wire
  • 1,564 plan to buy electric fence energizers
  • 1,402 plan to buy electric fence posts
  • 1,106 plan to buy solar power systems
  • 351 plan to buy wildlife fencing

Horse Ownership

Most subscribers to The Cattleman own horses, with a total of 49,389 head. Subscribers who own horses spend $11,684,329 a year on horse management practices, including:

  • 5,825 use vaccination for a total of $2,119,019
  • 6,931 use worming for a total of $1,128,921
  • 4,640 use feed supplements for a total of $6,003,882
  • 4,047 use vitamins/minerals for a total of $1,925,927
  • 4,154 use fly control for a total of $506,580

Wildlife land use is on the rise...

More than a quarter of The Cattleman's subscribers lease all or part of their land for hunting and fishing. Deer hunting is the most common, followed by game birds, feral hogs and fishing. Two out of five subscribers who lease land also purchase game feed and more than a fourth of them buy game feeders. About one out of six buys deer stands and minerals for game.

  • 4,097 subscribers lease land for hunting and fishing for a total of 21,462,954 acres.
