Subscriber Survey: Management Practices

Findings: Subscribers use a wide range of cattle management practices, with projected total annual expenditures of $87,339,939 for selected management practices. This is similar to the projections from previous surveys. Practices include:

  • 13,464 use feed supplements for a total of $43,725,297
  • 12,925 use vaccination for a total of $13,085,217
  • 12,115 use worming for a total of $10,451,050
  • 9,255 use insect control for a total of $4,061,596
  • 8,065 use ear tags for a total of $2,331,257
  • 6,720 background calves for a total of $11,925,218
  • 3,507 use implants for a total of $1,760,304

Findings: Most subscribers purchase replacement bulls by private treaty. They are also more likely to purchase replacement females by private treaty. The 9,768 subscribers who reported purchasing bulls buy an average of 2.81 per year, for a total of 27,448 bulls. The 6,693 subscribers who reported purchasing replacement females buy an average of 22.1 a year, for a total of 147,915. As in previous surveys, most of the subscribers change bulls at least once every five years.

Table 3.6 Where Animal Health Supplies Are Purchased

Findings: As in previous surveys, about two out of three subscribers to The Cattleman buy animal health supplies from a retail store. Almost half purchase these supplies from a veterinarian. About one out of six buys health supplies through mail order and one out of eight buys through a sales representative. Only a few currently purchase animal health supplies over the Internet.
